What MIL-DTL-5541 Actually Specifies

The full title is Military Detail Specification for Chemical Conversion Coatings on Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys. It defines requirements for chromate and chromate-free chemical conversion coatings applied to aluminium, covering everything from the chemistry permitted to the testing required to verify the coating meets spec.

The drawing will typically call out both requirements separately: the conversion coating class for the substrate treatment, and a separate paint or powder coating specification for the topcoat. The conversion coating still has to meet its own MIL-DTL-5541 testing requirements independently of how well the powder coating performs on top of it.

How a Typical Drawing Callout Reads

Example: "Finish: Chemical conversion coating per MIL-DTL-5541, Class 1A, Type II (chromate-free). Topcoat: Powder coat per [internal coating spec], colour per [colour reference]."
