We get asked this question almost every week — and the honest answer is that it depends on three things more than anything else: what chemistry the coating is, how well the surface was prepared before coating, and what environment the coated product will live in. Get all three right and powder coating can easily outlast the product it's protecting. Get one of them wrong and you may be looking at recoating within five years.

Service Life by Application

The table below represents typical real-world service life expectations based on our production experience, field observations, and published data from Qualicoat weathering studies and independent salt spray testing. These figures assume correct coating specification for the application — a hybrid powder on an outdoor gate, for instance, would perform far worse than the polyester figure shown.

The Three Factors That Determine Service Life

1. Coating Chemistry

A hybrid epoxy polyester coating on an outdoor gate will chalk and fade within 3–5 years. The same gate coated with a pure polyester will look good for 12–15 years. Chemistry is the single most impactful specification decision for outdoor applications.

2. Pre-Treatment Quality

A correctly specified polyester powder coating on poorly prepared steel — no conversion coating, no DI final rinse — will begin to delaminate within 1–3 years from corrosion under the film. Pre-treatment failure is invisible until it's catastrophic.

3. Service Environment

The same coating that lasts 20 years in a UK office park may last 8 years in coastal Mallorca. UV intensity, salt loading, temperature cycling, and industrial pollution all accelerate weathering. Environment must be part of the specification decision.

4. Film Build and Application Quality

Film build below 50μm on edges and recessed areas accelerates local corrosion initiation. Film build consistency, edge coverage, and curing completeness all affect how long the coating provides protection where it matters most.

How Powder Coatings Deteriorate Over Time

Understanding the deterioration sequence helps you set realistic maintenance expectations and catch problems before they become costly.

Stage 1
Years 1–5 (outdoors)

With correct specification, no visible change. Gloss may reduce slightly on lower-quality Class 1 coatings in high-UV environments. Colour measurement with a spectrophotometer may show early ΔE values of 0.5–1.0, below the threshold of visual detectability.

Stage 2
Years 5–12

Gradual gloss reduction becomes visible in direct comparison. In hybrid coatings exposed to UV, chalking (surface powdering from photodegradation of epoxy linkages) becomes apparent. Colour shift may be noticeable on saturated or darker colours. Still functionally protective.

Stage 3
Years 12–20+

Significant gloss loss and colour fading on anything less than Class 2 polyester in high-UV environments. Surface micro-cracking may begin in areas of high thermal cycling. Edge corrosion may initiate if film build was thin at edges or if pre-treatment was marginal.

Stage 4
End of service life

Delamination, peeling, or significant blistering indicating loss of adhesion — typically driven by corrosion under the film rather than UV degradation alone. At this point the coating no longer provides functional protection and full recoat or replacement is required.

Indoor vs Outdoor: Why the Gap Is So Large

The dramatically longer service life of indoor powder coatings — 20–30+ years on shelving and enclosures versus 10–15 years on outdoor gates — comes down almost entirely to the absence of UV radiation and the much lower severity of thermal cycling and moisture exposure indoors.

Hybrid epoxy polyester, which chalks and yellows outdoors within a few years, performs exceptionally well indoors because the UV degradation mechanism never activates. The coating retains its hardness, adhesion, and corrosion protection almost indefinitely in a clean, dry indoor environment. Failure, when it eventually occurs, is typically mechanical (impact, abrasion) rather than chemical degradation.

The Pre-Treatment Wild Card

The biggest source of premature failure we see is not incorrect powder chemistry — it's pre-treatment failures that were invisible at the time of delivery. Osmotic blistering from residual soluble salts, underfilm corrosion from inadequate phosphate conversion coating, and adhesion loss from poor DI rinse quality can all present 1–3 years after delivery on parts that looked perfect when they left the line. When we see early coating failures, pre-treatment records are always the first thing we examine. This is why we invest heavily in bath chemistry controls and DI water monitoring — and why you should ask your coater about theirs.

How to Extend Powder Coating Service Life

Practical Maintenance Recommendations

Annual inspection: Check for chips, scratches, or edge corrosion early — a small chip addressed promptly costs far less than a delamination driven by three years of underpaint corrosion from that entry point.
Wash regularly: Salt, industrial pollution, and traffic film are all aggressive to coating surfaces. Annual washing with a mild detergent (pH 6–9) removes accumulated contaminants before they cause long-term damage. Critical for coastal and urban installations.
Avoid abrasive cleaning: Wire brushes, abrasive pads, and pressure washing at close range will accelerate gloss loss and micro-scratch the surface, increasing UV degradation rate.
Touch-up scratches promptly: There is no perfect powder coat touch-up system, but a compatible liquid paint touch-up (e.g. Interpon or Syntha Pulvin liquid touch-up matched to your colour) applied to scratches down to bare metal prevents the corrosion initiation that causes progressive delamination.
Seasonal storage where applicable: Powder-coated outdoor furniture stored under cover during winter can see its service life extended by 30–50%, simply by reducing UV and freeze-thaw cycling hours.

Getting a Warranty

A responsible coating applicator should be able to offer a coating adhesion and application quality warranty — typically 2–5 years covering delamination, blistering, and adhesion failure attributable to process defects. This warranty does not cover colour fading or gloss loss (which are coating material characteristics, not application failures), nor does it cover mechanical damage or incorrect specification.
